Should I Wait Until I've Lost Weight Before Buying My Wedding Dress?

This is one of the most common questions we get… over the past year, that conversation has become even more common. More people than ever are embarking on significant weight-loss journeys, whether through lifestyle changes, weight-loss medication, surgery or other health decisions.

But weight loss isn't the only reason our bodies change; stress, illness, hormones, pregnancy, menopause, strength training and simply the passing of time can all affect our shape. Most of us won't have exactly the same body twelve months apart, and that's completely normal.

The question isn't whether your body is allowed to change, it absolutely is! The question is how those changes affect a handcrafted wedding dress that is made specifically for you.

Should I wait before shopping?

In almost every case, no!

Wedding dresses aren't bought from a shelf a few weeks before your wedding. They're made months in advance, and for many designers that process can take around a year. If you wait until you've reached your goal, you may find yourself with fewer choices, tighter production deadlines and less flexibility if your body continues to change before your wedding. We'd much rather help you plan around your journey than have you miss out on finding the dress you truly love.

Please don't worry about telling us

This is something people often whisper to us, almost apologetically. Please don't feel awkward. We're never here to judge your body or your goals. What you choose to do with your body is entirely your decision.

Whether you're hoping to lose half a stone or five stone, our role isn't to tell you what you should do. Our role is to make sure your dress fits you beautifully - the only thing we ask is that you tell us what's happening.

Why don't we just start making a smaller size?

It's a sensible question, but unfortunately bodies don't work that way.

Weight loss doesn't happen evenly. Some people lose weight from their waist first. Others notice it in their bust, hips, arms or back. Some people gain muscle and become smaller without the scales changing very much at all. There simply isn't a reliable way of predicting what your future shape will look like. That's why we chose a starting point to fit the body you have today, knowing we can tailor it to your body later.

Wedding dresses can absolutely be altered...

Our standard alterations package is designed around the natural fluctuations we see every year. Most people change a little between ordering their dress and their wedding, and that's completely expected. The package covers the kind of adjustments we routinely make, such as taking a dress in or out by up to 2 inches, adjusting hems, refining sleeves or straps and all the finishing touches that make your dress feel as though it was made just for you.

Beyond that, the work often becomes something quite different. Rather than simply altering the dress, we're effectively reconstructing it. Depending on the design, that may involve rebuilding the bodice, replacing panels, repositioning lace and embellishment, rebalancing the proportions or remaking significant sections of the gown.

This is highly skilled couture work, and it's something we're very experienced in doing. If you've lost a significant amount of weight, we'll always discuss what's possible and work with you to achieve the best result. However, because this requires many additional hours of craftsmanship beyond a standard fitting, reconstruction work falls outside our usual alterations package and is quoted separately.

Once alterations begin, our aim is stability

Your fitting appointments are where your dress is transformed from fitting well to fitting beautifully, so we kindly ask that you try to maintain your shape from the start of your fittings.

Every pin, seam and adjustment is made around the body you bring to that appointment. If your measurements continue to change between fittings, we're no longer refining the previous work - we're undoing it and starting again, and in some cases this duplicating work means higher alteration costs.

Sometimes the same area of the dress needs altering multiple times because it fitted perfectly a fortnight earlier, but your body has changed again. We completely understand that not every body change can be predicted or controlled, particularly where health, medication or hormones are involved. However, if you're actively planning significant ongoing changes, it's really helpful to discuss your timeline with us. Together, we can work out the best point to begin your alterations and give your dress the greatest chance of fitting perfectly on your wedding day.

Why communication matters so much

Imagine two people who both lose four stone before their wedding.

One tells us before ordering their dress, the other mentions it twelve weeks before their wedding at their first fitting. The outcome can be completely different.

For the first person, we can talk through timelines, plan fittings differently, think ahead about construction and allow enough time for any additional work that may be needed. For the second person, we're suddenly trying to solve a complex engineering challenge that we had not allocated time for against an immovable wedding date.

The weight loss isn't the problem… the lack of time is! The earlier we understand your journey, the more options we have to make your dress exactly what you dreamed of.

Every fitting is handcrafted

Every seam is carefully unpicked by hand, every panel is rebalanced, every lace motif is repositioned individually, and every bead, every layer and every detail has to continue looking as though the dress was made that way from the very beginning.

This is why significant body changes require time. Not because your body is a problem, but because beautiful craftsmanship simply can't be rushed.

Your body is never the problem

Bodies change. Life happens. We get it. We’ll never tell you what you should or shouldn’t do with your own body. Our role is to help you understand how those changes affect your dress so that together we can make thoughtful decisions, plan ahead where needed and ensure you still feel amazing when you walk down the aisle.

The earlier we understand your journey, the more beautifully we can tailor your dress to it. After all, your wedding dress isn't made to fit a number on a label.

It's made to fit you.
