Before we can create your dress, you’ll need to know what symbol to order. We know that for many people this can feel surprisingly daunting. Bodies can be complicated, measurements can bring up unexpected feelings, and the thought of getting them "wrong" can be stressful.

So before we begin, take a breath and know that there is no judgement here.

Measurements are simply numbers that help us create a beautiful garment for your body. They are not a reflection of your worth, your health, your identity or the space you deserve to take up in the world.

This guide will walk you through the process step by step. Take your time, ask for help if you need it, and remember that we're always here if you have questions along the way.

How to take your measurements:

Unlike a fully bespoke garment, our collection dresses are not made to your exact measurements from the outset. Instead, we compare your measurements against our size chart and create your dress in the closest standard size.

There are a couple of reasons for this.

Firstly, it helps keep our prices far more accessible. Each design in our collection has already been carefully developed, fitted and graded to our size chart, allowing us to move straight into creating your dress rather than producing individual mock-ups and multiple rounds of pattern development for every order.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, bodies are wonderfully human. Over the course of a typical 12-month order it's completely normal for measurements to fluctuate. Holidays happen, stressful periods happen, medications change, fitness routines come and go, and life carries on.

By starting with the closest standard size and carrying out final fitting alterations closer to your wedding date, we can accommodate those natural changes far more effectively than if we were trying to create a perfectly fitted garment a year in advance.

So don't worry if your measurements aren't exact to the millimetre, and don't panic if your body changes between now and your wedding day. The measurements we're taking today simply help us determine the best starting point for creating your dress

  • Taking a few steps now will make the difference between a good measurement and a miss measurement.

    • Ask for someone to help you - a second pair of hands is always welcome to check the tape is in the right place.

    • Remove bulky clothing - ideally just wear whichever underwear gives you the most natural shape.

    • Use a soft tape measure - not a ruler or builders tape measure… we see you!

    • Stand naturally - stand straight, with your feet hip width apart and arms relaxed at your side. Don’t suck in and breath normally.

    • The tape measure should be snug - it should be flat against your body in a horizontal line. It should not be pulled tight, but not loose either. Being able to put one finger behind is a good indication.

    • Measure twice - If you get the same number you can be confident in the measurement. If they differ half a cm or quarter-inch, measure a third time.

  • To keep things simple, we are only going to take 3 measurements: Chest, Waist and Hips. This is with the intention of perfecting the fit with alterations 3 months before the wedding

    • Chest - the tape measure should follow a horizontal line around the fullest part of your chest.

    • Waist - to find your natural waist we recommend tying a ribbon or piece of elastic around your midriff and leaving it there for a while. With movement the ribbon will naturally sit on your waist. Use the tape measure to measure the circumference where the ribbon sits.

    • Hips - Pass the tape around the widest part of your hips and fullest part of your bottom. The position can vary for different people so we are just looking for the widest part.

    • Skirt length - Our standard skirt length is 46” so we just want to check if you need extra length. Place one end of the tape measure on your waist and measure down to the floor. We recommend repeating this measurement wearing the type of shoes you plan to wear on the day - or as close as possible.

  • Compare your measurements against the size chart below.

    STEP 1 - For most people the waist measurement is the most important measurement. Compare your measurements with the waist measurements and see which symbol you are closest to. If you are between 2 symbols choose the bigger one - It is always easier to make a dress smaller.

    STEP 2 - Compare your chest measurement to the chart. If your chest measurement falls in the same or smaller symbol than your waist symbol then stick with the waist symbol. If your chest measurement is higher than your waist symbol chose the chest symbol.

    STEP 3 - Take a look at the hip measurement. Again, if your hip symbol is equal or smaller than the symbol identified in step 2 then keep that symbol. If it is bigger we need to consider the dress.

    • If it is an A-line or princess dress like Asteria, Melinoe, Zorya then you can ignore the hip measurement

    • If it is a form fitting dress like Demeter or Kore then the hip measurement is important. If your hip symbol is bigger than your waist or chest symbol then this is the new symbol to order.

    If your measurements don’t seem to fit the the chart please do not worry. All bodies are different and the size chart is just a starting point.

  • If you’ve measured yourself a couple of times and you’re still getting an unexpected result, don’t worry. Bodies are wonderfully varied, and a size chart is simply a guide to help us find the best starting point.

    A few things to bear in mind:

    • If your chest falls several symbols smaller than your hips (or vice versa), it’s worth getting in touch before ordering. Depending on the design, we may be able to split the sizing or suggest the best approach for your shape.

    • If your measurements fall outside the size chart please don’t assume that means we can’t make your dress. It simply means the standard size chart isn’t the right starting point. Because every Legend gown is made to order, we’re able to work well beyond the measurements shown on the chart. The size chart isn’t a limit, it’s just a guide.
